Most often than not, in the midst of enthusiastic learners standing in twos, threes, or more, you could hear them discuss on the very many ways one could easily grasp one’s academic work. Usually, an argument could ensue when there is a dissenting opinion, especially when such seem controversial. At the end of it all, it still holds true that the things birthing an effective study is yet to be ascertained.

Consequently, if you are asked to explain what the concept “effective study” is, you might trail the popular path that “it is such that you are able to recall and put to use when they are needed”. In the four walls of an academic institution, there is a lingo: “na who pass wey sabi”. Thus, in that parlance, a study is adjudged effective when you are able to produce the studied materials in an exam hall, and afterwards make a good grade (or, come first in the class— for non tertiary students). If you ask me, those are not far from the truth. However, the emphasis now is on the feasibility.

Hence, effective study is not achievable without effective strategy. Just like you cannot construct a standard building without first having an architectural design and plan, so can you not record an outstanding success in studies sans meticulous plan and mindset.

Therefore, I bring to you in few suggestions what we might have known but neglected because we thought manna still fall from the sky.

ARE YOU AT THE RIGHT PLACE?

One of the biggest challenges of academic excellence is a soul void of an average enthusiasm to forge ahead in one’s course work. That level of indifference is first cultivated when one, owing to one thing or the other, finds oneself in a particular field of study. Because it is something that had not been envisaged, there could be no underlying orientation and, or passion to propel one into firing on. Definitely, passion or love for what one does, gives one the resilience and eagerness to work harder, and an optimistic heart that cooks a meal called “faith” which further stabilises the quest to succeed.

SET A HIGH STANDARD AND TARGET

According to the popular author, Norman Vincent Peale, “shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars”. This holds true because target usually confers on us the urgency of doing and the scheme to our success. Effective study is not a haphazard thing, as explained earlier, so that you should have, at any given time, what you hope to achieve. Now, you do not become work-shy, the indolent one who is afraid to have big dreams. That is mediocrity! Prepare a schedule that stretches your limit at all times. The good news is that you stand to gain at both ends: if you meet up with your target, you are a genius; if you eventually fall short of your target any time, you will definitely still stand at an amazing height. That sounds good, isn’t it?

WHY NOT BE YOURSELF?

In the course of physiology, it has been revealed that everyone has peculiarities which made us feat for our world. A lot of things have set in to define our various uniqueness. For this reason, a mind willing to achieve in learning, for instance, should apply Socrate’s philosophy: “man know thyself”. This comes as a warning that what works for someone could not also work for you so that you do not go about copying every habit because, in Igbo adage literary translated: “if the rat joins the lizard in dancing in the rain, when it (the water) dries up on the lizard’s skin, it might not dry on that of the rat”. Do you grasp more in the day than in the night? Do you like to play soft music while reading? Do you prefer audio lectures or discussion groups? Etc…. Verily, yourself is what you alone can find out so that you believe with Chinua Achebe, thus, “Nobody can teach me who I am. You can describe parts of me, but who I am –and what I need– is something I have to find out myself”. Find it out and be yourself. Trust me, someone would like to copy you too.

REJUVENATION IS ESSENTIAL

In as much as it is advised that one reads without season, it does not imply that one should work against nature. Nature is that one should rest when one’s body system becomes weak. Nature is that one eats to gain strength for studies. In other words, one has no business reading when one is tired and, or hungry. Your brain is one of the parts of the body that require high supply of food nutrients and energy currency (ATP) in order to function well. And it also wears down with excess usage just like other biological, or even mechanical systems. Thus, when you refresh, sleep, rest, take a break during studies, you give it time to relax and prepare for the next rounds. Moreover, do not undermine the place of exercise as it ensures better supply of blood to the brain, and also makes it more at alert.

READ TO PASS AND TO KNOW

It is an erroneous reasoning that we are often admonished to always read to know. Without mincing words, this do not usually work for academic studies because the first essence is to pass your exams, then, store vital information perpetually. A situation where one becomes a “jackometer” (slanguage) who seems to know, virtually, everything yet perform poorly in class works and exams is most odious. Drafting from that, you should first read to pass your exams by ensuring that you read the right materials at all times. The world is stage by stage. When you are able to get much from your present academic stage, it helps you lay a better foundation for the tougher stages ahead.

In conclusion, following the few suggestions above, it is observed that effective study is something that is achievable and also non-achievable as it boils down to persons. Ability to understand how to go about your reading to bring out the best in you makes it achievable. Once laziness, negligence, or even misinformation sets in, you are likely to conclude that it is a folktale to study with maximum output.

Thanks for reading.
