They further receive lectures in courses like clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, pathology, molecular biology etc, this being their core courses.

A medical laboratory scientist is responsible for generating accurate laboratory data that are needed to aid in detecting cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, infectious mononucleosis, and identification of bacteria or viruses that cause infections, as well as in detecting drugs of abuse. A medical laboratory scientist makes analyses on body fluids such as blood, urine, sputum, stool, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), peritoneal fluid, pericardial fluid, and synovial fluid and some other specimen related to any viral infection, bacterial infection and fungal infection.

After the undergraduate training in a Nigerian university, the newly graduated medical laboratory scientists are inducted into the profession and are given license of practice. They are to go for the compulsory one year internship programme. During this period, they will be working under the supervision of a senior medical laboratory scientist or consultant in the field.

After service, they are eligible to look for a job. A Medical Laboratory scientist can work in a hospital laboratory. They can also work in reference laboratory, as well as biotechnology labs. They can also choose to go into private practice and setting up their own laboratory( this is the best recommendation) if they have the funds available.
