Physiotherapy is a medical courses that deals with the study of enhancing health by using physical methods like manual therapy as well as physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being of a patient.

A physiotherapist on the order hand is a healthcare professional who has graduated from studying physiotherapy in the university. Physiotherapy is a five (5) year undergraduate course in an accredited Nigerian University. The curriculum is similar to other basic medical and allied medical courses offered in the university. The associated degree after the completion of physiotherapy undergraduate training in an accredited Nigerian University is the Bachelor in physiotherapy (BPT) degree. The awarded degree marks the successful completion of training in the course.

In Nigerian Universities, physiotherapy is under the umbrella of the Faculty of Health Sciences/Allied Medical Sciences. This may be different depending on a particular university. Some may even place it under the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.


The physiotherapy curriculum in Nigerian universities is similar to other medical sciences courses. The first year in physiotherapy course, students are taught the basic sciences like physics, chemistry, biology. They also borrow core courses like Mathematics and use of English as this is compulsory for all year 1 students studying in Nigeria. They also offer some GST and GSS courses which are core examination courses set up by the university itself. Exams are taken at the end of each semester.

The second year in physiotherapy course marks the commencement of lectures in basic medical courses like anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. They write exams at the end of each semester.

From 3rd to 5th year, they do their core departmental courses and may be exposed to some clinical activities regarding their area of specialty. This will make them to have a vast and concrete knowledge about their nature of work and as well build a state of experience and expertise in their field of study.

After the undergraduate training in physiotherapy, the graduated physiotherapist are inducted out of college and are given license of practice and awarded the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) degree. Like other allied medical courses, physiotherapy do go for the compulsory one year internship programme. After completion of their internship programme, they are free to go for the compulsory one year National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) Programme which is mandatory for all graduates in Nigeria.

JAMB UTME subject combination for physiotherapy is the same as for other allied medical/basic medical courses. A candidate applying for physiotherapy must include the following subjects during JAMB registration – Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. These are the core JAMB subject combination for all medical courses including physiotherapy. Anything other than this will lead to a denial of admission or ineligibility for being considered for admission.

It is really important to have all the requirements grades in your senior school certification examinations before applying for any course in the university. That is why it is also important to find out the o’level subject combination for a particular course before including it as a preferred course during UTME registration.

The o’level subject combination for physiotherapy are – The candidate must have at least 5 credit passes in Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The 5 credit passes implies that the candidate applying for physiotherapy must have at least a C6 in the aforementioned subjects. Grades lesser than C is not accepted by any university in Nigeria.
